Since which time I have resided in the city a of Austin in my own house 311 North Kenwood avenue. While on the farm I was elected Justice of the Peace #and filled that office for three successive terms on farm and village of Austin and on the last term was made a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church and still continue up to this day During my .ministry after three years service I was ordained Deacon at the Rochester Conference by Bishop Mathews Simpson and two years later elder at the Minneapolis Conference by Bishop Levi Scott. I have all these credentials of license and ordination in my possession now. So I preached on also assisting some of the women and children who were left alone on their farms and the good providence of the almighty God so arranged that I was not drafted from either Austin or Princeton. And while I did not get into the soldier's life I preached & and took up collections for the benefit of those who went and sent to the Christian or Sanitary Commission to buy such things as the government could not, or did not supply—And I shall never forget the Sunday when the news reached us that Wilkes Booth had shot Presdent Abraham Lincoln I just felt as if I did not want to hold services in the WE WANT YOU ALL YOUNG AND OLD TO INSPECT OUR church at Princeton that night.
